You’ll know it’s spring when the brilliant flowers of President Clay Azalea bloom. This shrub is a prolific bloomer that boasts bright pink flowers. The 5-petaled flowers have dark pink accents on the throat for a subtle accent. The glossy foliage is chartreuse when it first opens and transitions into a deeper green hue. This shrub is a broadleaf evergreen, so the foliage stays in place year-round, offering consistent color and texture even during winter.
This is a large Azalea that works wonderfully as a privacy screen. Feature the President Clay Azalea near a property line or alongside a deck or patio to create an intimate space. Plant this shrub in the back of a mixed bed to add height. Pollinators favor the spring flowers. President Clay Azalea is fully hardy in zones 7 through 9.
President Clay Azalea Care
Plant this shrub in full sun to partial shade. Provide rich, moist, well-drained soil with an acidic pH. Azaleas like damp conditions but don’t like wet feet. Spread a thick layer of mulch to hold moisture in when the temperature soars. Apply an acidic fertilizer in early spring to encourage abundant flowering.
Remove dead or damaged growth at any time. Prune the plant to shape and encourage a full, bushy form in late spring or early summer after the flowers decline but before next year’s flower buds emerge.
President Clay Azalea Spacing
The President Clay Azalea reaches an impressive 6 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Space shrubs 6 to 8 feet apart to create a dense hedge.
