One of the best parts of walking outside in the late spring is the new, fragrant smells from all the blooming trees and shrubs. This french lilac, much like any fragrant lilac, is an awesome contributor. What makes this particular type of lilac special is a bloom color of violet and lavender that come together to a beautiful shade of purple. This lilac is a hummingbird, and pollinators dream.
This lilac is a low maintenance perennial shrub that will grow vertically year after year, as it’s hardy in zones 4-8. Its roots resemble those of trees, and once established it can be expected to be very hardy and dependable. Due to this plant’s height characteristics, this shrub actually makes an exceptional cut flower filler, or stem for a bouquet. Perhaps the most lovely characteristic of this lilac - the enjoyable lilac fragrance.
President Poincare French Lilac Care
This perennial will thrive in either full or partial sun. It’s best to plant within a neutral pH soil that's well drained. It would benefit from light, all purpose fertilization. Be careful not to use too harsh of a fertilization product as this is a perennial that could suffer from chemical burn due to fertilizing. If using granular fertilizer, it’s best to use half of the concentration that’s recommended.
Pruning too much can create a delay in blooming, as blooms happen most often when the shrub is tall. This lilac does, however benefit greatly from deadheading spent blooms.
President Poincare French Lilac Spacing
This lilac is compact in width, but grows very tall to heights of nine to eleven feet. For this reason, it should be spaced at nine to eleven feet as well.
