Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry (Rubus hybrid 'APF-153T') is a thornless, primocane-fruiting blackberry developed by the University of Arkansas. It can crop on first-year canes, which means berry season can start sooner than with traditional types. The berries are very large and glossy with a sweet flavor and firm texture. Young plants may begin ripening berries on first-year canes as early as July in their first growing season. Beginning the second year, overwintered canes can produce an earlier June crop, while new first-year canes may produce a second crop from midsummer into fall.
Growing about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Prime-Ark® Freedom fits neatly into edible borders, berry rows, low hedges, and large patio containers. Our favorite feature is the no-thorn picking experience, so nobody has to work around scratched hands. This variety also attracts pollinators, including birds and butterflies, supporting a healthy garden ecosystem.
Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry Care
Plant Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry in full sun, with 6 to 8 hours of direct light for the best flowering, cane ripening, and berry sweetness. Use well-drained loamy soil with a slightly acidic pH around 6.0 to 6.8, and improve heavy clay with compost so water does not linger around the crown.
Set the plant at the same depth it grew in the nursery container, keep the crown just above settled soil. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart for airflow and picking room. A trellis is optional, but a simple two-wire support keeps fruit-heavy canes upright and makes it easier to separate new primocanes from older floricanes during pruning.
Growing Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry
Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry can bear 1 to 2 years after planting, and in favorable climates it produces on second-year floricanes in early summer and on current-season primocanes from midsummer into fall. It is self-pollinating, so a single plant can fruit, though several plants will provide a larger picking season for fresh eating, freezing, cobblers, sauces, and jam.
Pick berries when they are fully black, glossy, and slip off with a light tug, then chill them soon after harvest for the best texture. Because this variety was selected for home gardens and local markets rather than long-distance shipping, enjoy or process ripe berries soon after picking.
Growing Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry in Containers
Choose a 20 to 25 gallon container with a broad base, since this blackberry produces strong upright canes and can become top-heavy when loaded with fruit. Use a compost-enriched potting mix with sharp drainage, and place the pot in full sun near a fence or small support frame. Refresh the top layer of mix each spring, and thin extra canes before the container becomes crowded at the crown. In cold climates, move the pot against a protected wall after leaf drop or insulate the container, because potted roots experience sharper temperature swings than roots in garden soil.
Watering Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry
Keep the root zone evenly moist through bloom and fruiting, giving roughly 1 to 2 inches of water per week from rainfall or irrigation. Small berries, dry drupelets, or stalled primocane growth often point to drought stress, while yellowing canes in wet soil can signal poor drainage.
Feeding Prime-Ark® Freedom Blackberry
Feed in early spring with a balanced berry fertilizer or a nitrogen source labeled for brambles to support new primocanes and flower development. After the early crop finishes, a light second feeding can help fuel the later primocane crop, but avoid heavy late-season fertilizer that delays cane hardening.
