Primrose Beauty Potentilla is a real hardworking beauty in the dry and sunny garden. Bright, single petaled, yellow flowers bloom throughout the summer in contrast to the fine, gray-green leaves. Potentilla is a great filler for those spots that nothing else seems to grow well. Planted as a foundation plant or to spill over a wall, Primrose Beauty Potentilla will give a full three seasons of interest.
Primrose Beauty can be used at the front of the garden bed, in the middle or on its own to slow erosion on a slope. The small, ferny leaves are impervious to urban pollution, deer resistant, salt and wind tolerant and will bloom happily in even the poorest soil. This hard worker is even a great attractor of butterflies and bees. The ferny foliage and large papery blooms are shown off greatly when planted in a dry, rock garden.
Primrose Beauty Potentilla Care
Potentilla Primrose Beauty Is the lowest maintenance shrub you will ever find. The soil requirements are almost nothing. Any soil works as long as there is good drainage. Fertilizer is rarely needed. Bushy Cinquefoil is hardy all of the way down to hardiness zone 2a, so it can truly be used just about anywhere.
Pruning is rarely needed. The loose bushy shape is much more desirable than a tight, clipped appearance. When left to spread, Potentilla will fill in areas at a moderate and steady rate. Disease resistance is high for Cinquefoil. The only enemy is overly wet soil. This can cause root rots and a quick death of the Potentilla.
Primrose Beauty Potentilla Spacing
This long lived shrub is best planted in groups or as a border plant. Spacing each shrub 4 feet on center will ensure that Potentilla has the room to spread out its branches to the fullest.
