Elegant, deeply ribbed flowers adorn Prince Charles Clematis all summer. The flowers, which are a mauve-blue color, are 4 inches in diameter and have a contrasting creamy yellow center. All this flower power comes on pretty vining stems that stretch to 6 to 8 feet high. The plant grows to about 2 feet wide and loves to wind and climb. Use this pretty summerlong bloomer to adorn a trellis, fence, or patio post.

Prince Charles also grows well in containers, so gardeners can place them where they’ll enjoy the flowers and pollinators most. The big blooms are friendly to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, which just adds to their appeal. The clematis is hardy to the cold of zone 4 and can take heat up to zone 9. Add vertical beauty and elegance to an entryway, deck, patio, or ho-hum fence with Prince Charles Clematis.

Prince Charles Clematis Care

Plant your clematis in a container or landscape spot with rich soil that drains well. Give the plant consistent watering so that the soil remains moist. If possible, plant the climber so the stems receive at least 4 hours of sunlight a day, but so the base of the plant gets some cooling shade. You also can add annual plants or stones near the plant’s base to shade the soil.

Clematis is a heavy feeder, and can benefit from regular fertilizing. Give the plant a low-nitrogen fertilizer each spring and a balanced fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during summer for best blooming. This clematis is in pruning group 3, which means the plant blooms on new growth each year. So prune the stems in late winter or early spring, cutting all old stems down to just above a pair of emerging buds.

Prince Charles Clematis Spacing

Be sure to plant your clematis near a structure it can climb, or add a small trellis or obelisk to its container. If planting several in a row, space them about 2 feet apart from center to center.
