Pringles Dwarf Podocarpus, or Podocarpus macrophyllus ‘Pringles’, is a compact, dense, evergreen shrub with fine-textured, deep green foliage. New growth emerges a lighter green, adding contrast throughout the growing season. Its slow growth habit and manageable size—typically reaching 3 to 5 feet in height—make it ideal for small gardens, foundation plantings, or low hedges. This adaptable shrub thrives in both sun and shade, maintaining its rich color in various light conditions.

Native to Japan and China, this dwarf podocarpus is highly tolerant of heat, humidity, and salt, making it an excellent choice for coastal landscapes. It requires little maintenance and is resistant to most pests and diseases. Its upright, slightly spreading habit allows it to function as a border, mass planting, or even a container specimen. Birds may be attracted to its small, bluish seed cones, adding an extra layer of interest to the landscape.

Pringles Dwarf Podocarpus Care

This shrub performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil but adapts to a range of soil types. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as the plant matures. It tolerates drought once established but benefits from occasional deep watering in extended dry periods. For best growth, plant in full sun to partial shade and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Pruning is optional, depending on the desired shape. It responds well to light shearing for a more formal look but also maintains an attractive natural form without frequent trimming. For container-grown specimens, occasional root pruning may be necessary to prevent it from becoming root-bound.

Pringles Dwarf Podocarpus Spacing

For a hedge, space plants 3-4 feet apart for a dense, uniform look. In mixed plantings or as an accent, allow at least 4 to 6 feet between shrubs to highlight its natural shape. When planting in containers, choose a pot at least 16 inches wide to accommodate its slow-growing root system.
