Growing Zones
Pristine Blue Beardtongue (Penstemon barbatus 'Pristine Blue') is a moody blue perennial for USDA zones 5-9. This is a hardy plant and when established, it grows vigorously, requiring little maintenance. Pristine Blue Beardtongue has shiny green foliage and showy deep blue flowers that appear in late summer and continue through the early fall. This plant can reach 15-20 inches tall and spread to about 10-15 inches wide in a mounding shape.
The Pristine Blue Beardtongue is perfect for containers with adequate drainage, rock gardens and cut flower arrangements. It is drought tolerant once established and rabbit resistant. Pristine Blue Beardtongue also attracts hummingbirds and other beneficial pollinators.
Pristine Blue Beardtongue Care
Pristine Blue Beardtongue requires full sun for vigorous growth and continuous blooms. Provide it with a south, west, or eastern exposure. For best results plant Pristine Blue Beardtongue in moist, well-draining soil. However, it can tolerate neutral, alkaline or acidic soils and adapts well to poor soils. Feed this plant annually with an all-purpose fertilizer, or apply a layer of compost on the surrounding area.
Throughout the growing season, remove the spent blooms to encourage new ones to appear. Prune back the entire plant during the late fall after the blooming season has ended to prepare for winter. Clumps of Pristine Blue Beardtongue can easily be divided during the early spring months.
Pristine Blue Beardtongue Spacing
Space Pristine Blue Beardtongue about 18 inches apart when growing it in borders or a mass planting. In a container, Pristine Blue Beardtongue makes a beautiful focal point.
