Growing Zones
Producing lovely pinkish-rose blossoms atop lustrous emerald stems, Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue provides interest all summer long whether outside in the garden or inside in bouquets. Growing to a maximum height of 15 to 20 inches and spread of 10 to 15 inches, this herbaceous perennial attracts songbirds, bees, and hummingbirds with its bright, tubular flowers. Otherwise known as Penstemon barbatus ‘Pristine Deep Rose’ and Beardlip Beardtongue, this easy-to-grow perennial is cold hardy in zones 5-9 and blooms its first year.
Originating from the United States and Mexico, this summer bloomer possesses an upright, clumping growth habit. Deer and rabbit resistant, hungry critters do not pose a problem for Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue. Providing color, height, and texture to a garden or container, this vigorous wildflower is perfect for new gardeners who yearn to add dimension to gardens and borders.
Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue Care
To support the production of its rosy blooms, plant Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue in average to sandy, slightly acidic soil. To deter fungal disease and encourage growth, ensure that the soil drains well and has a pH varying between 5.5. to 6.5. If needed, improve soil drainage by adding sand/perlite. This herbaceous perennial thrives in full sun; however, morning sun is preferable. While drought tolerant, Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue will perform best with regular watering, especially during the flowering season. Provide an inch of water weekly to encourage growth and support blooming. Feed this low-maintenance plant a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer annually, diluted to half the strength recommended on the label.
Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue requires minimal pruning. Deadheading, or trimming dead blooms, will encourage continued flowering and prevent self-seeding. To tidy the shape, Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue can be cut back in early fall.
Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue Spacing
Add a wash of emerald with bursts of rose by planting this beardtongue in drifts, with at least 10 inches between plants. Whether planted en masse or as a specimen, this herbaceous perennial provides interest from spring until fall in cottage, rock, and alpine gardens. Pair it with good companion plants such as dahlias, flax, salvia, and yarrow. Growing well in a container, this striking plant adds charm to porches and patios as well. Depending on the sizes of the other plants, Pristine Deep Rose Beardtongue often acts as the thriller or filler in a combination planting.
