Proud Berry® Coral Berry (Symphoricarpos sp) is a very tough plant that produces leaves of green spring through fall. In late summer, it has bell-shaped white or pink flowers. In early fall, these flowers become pink fruit. The fruit is not edible, but they provide interest in the late fall and winter months.

The shrub is native to North America, in most of Canada and the northern United States. Since it is a cool weather plant, it will not be very successful in the southern portion of the United States. It is hardy in zones 3a-7b. Being native means the plant will be deer resistant. It also means it's helpful for wildlife, and birds may occasionally eat the berries. Catharina Marie Hoekstra-Arisz in the Netherlands developed this cultivar. It can be used in a number of ways: border, cut flower, mass plantings, landscape, as a specimen, and as a screen.

Proud Berry® Coral Berry Care

Proud Berry® Coral Berry likes an average moisture level in well-drained soils. It can be planted in full sun to part sun but will bear more fruit in full sunlight. Fertilize it after pruning each spring with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs.

In the early spring, just as new growth starts, prune the plant down to 12 inches tall. It will grow rapidly. Do not deadhead or you will not get berries.

Proud Berry® Coral Berry Spacing

Proud Berry® Coral Berry grows to 3-4 feet tall. It spreads 3-4 feet but can form a thicket of 4-6 feet wide if not cut back. It should be planted no closer than 3-4 feet to another plant.

Hopeful the deer will ignore it.

Posted by Kristina DAllaird on Jun 22, 2022

I have planted the Proud Berry Coral Berry with great anticpation. I live in zone 4 so colorful hardy plants are limited. I also live on a deer throughfare. Deer decimate my gardens. I have now set up a test garden, fence and stink spray free to see if they will eat the plants I choose. So far I am in good shape wiht the Proud Berry Coral Berry. A little nibble, but they gave up. Incredible since they LOVE everything that is deer resistant. Fingers crossed.
