Proven Accents® plants are great fillers and spillers for hanging baskets or containers. Big Leaf Creeping Vine has wonderfully dark stems that highlight small deep-green leaves. The leaves may look dainty, but they are tough as nails and can be a weed-suppressing ground cover in USDA growing zones 8-10. Muehlenbeckia complexa winds its way through and around other plants, giving any hanging basket a dynamic spiller element that brings the “wow” factor.
Colder growing zones can grow Big Leaf Creeping Vine as an annual in full or part sun locations. It will even tolerate a shadier, sheltered location such as a porch or screened deck. Virtually no disease or pest bothers Creeping Vine making it an easy-to-care-for plant that even new gardeners can grow successfully.
Proven Accents® Big Leaf Creeping Vine Care
Creeping Vine likes soil that has excellent drainage and average fertility. Ensure that there are plenty of drainage holes in the container. Heavy fertilizing is not required, although if Creeping Vine is planted with heavy feeder plants, it will tolerate well-balanced fertilizers, such as a diluted 5-5-5 liquid feed. Prune back stems in spring using a staggered cut to remove about 1/3 of new growth. This will help keep the plant compact and full.
Big Leaf Creeping Vine can easily be overwintered indoors as a houseplant. Plants growing outdoors in growing zones 8-10 will be evergreen and tolerate heavy cutting back late in the winter if needed to control the spread. In the growing zones below 8, bring the plants indoors when nighttime temperatures reach 50 degrees F. Hang baskets where plants will receive bright indirect sun, such as in a south- or west-facing window. Watering can be reduced to once every 7-10 days during the winter.
Proven Accents® Big Leaf Creeping Vine Spacing
The spread of Creeping Vine is large, but the overall growth is mounding and compact. The mature height is around 6 inches with a spread of 18-24 inches. If planting in a large group, space plants 18 inches apart on the plant center. A hanging basket with a 10-inch diameter is needed to grow one Creeping Vine.
