- Award winning deep chartreuse foliage!
The ornamental sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas) has made a name for itself as a vigorous grower and dependable foliage plant. Whether it’s grown as a groundcover or in combination planters, Proven Accents® Sweet Caroline Kiwi™ variety only improves on the sweet potato vine’s stellar reputation. This award-winning variety features a deep chartreuse color that makes flowering annuals and perennials pop in any planting. This vine loves heat and humidity, but will do well in cool, dry summer locations as well.
This trailing vine is often used as a “spiller” in containers, and while it’s a popular choice, it’s never one that gets old! Designers and gardeners will choose a sweet potato vine as a spiller over and over thanks to its cascading effect, adaptable nature and vigorous growth. While they can be planted in shady locations, you’ll notice your Sweet Caroline Kiwi™ to have a brighter color when grown in full sun.
Proven Accents Sweet Caroline Kiwi Sweet Potato Vine Care
Sweet potato vines are hearty, robust growers with few needs in the maintenance department. Regular fertilization will encourage continued growth and bright color, but they won’t shirk their duty if feeding is forgotten. The adaptable nature of the sweet potato vine also makes it an easy-going annual for perennial beds. Just be sure to water them any time the top 1-2” of soil dries out.
If your sweet potato vine starts to encroach on nearby plants, simply trim back the stems to allow other plants room to grow.
Proven Accents Sweet Caroline Kiwi Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
You can expect your Sweet Caroline Kiwi™ ornamental sweet potato vine to spread up to 3’ in a growing season if you live in a region that experiences hot, humid summers. If you have cooler or drier summers, you might see closer to 20” of spread. Space your plants with your growing environment in mind. Allow 18” between plants when creating a mass planting or border. Provide more space when planting near less vigorous growers. Allow 6” of space in containers, as the plant is more likely to spill over the sides of the container than to encroach on the plants next to it.
