- Vigorous growing ornamental vine!
Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea is an ornamental sweet potato vine. It has dramatic red foliage that draws the eye immediately. Don’t mistake this plant for the sweet potatoes you buy at the store. They all have a common ancestor, so eating the tuber won’t make you sick, but it won’t taste good, either. Scientists can’t decide if sweet potatoes originated in the tropical Americas or in Southeastern Asia.
Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea is heat tolerant. It will spread out as a ground cover when it is hot and humid. Cooler weather and lower humidity will encourage it to stay compact. It works as a groundcover, container plant, border, or a mass planting. In a container, this trailing plant can overwhelm the other plants in the container, so you may have to prune it back to save its neighbors. It does form a nice spiller in a container, trailing 30 inches.
Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Sweet Potato Vine Care
If you use Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea in the landscape, you will need to spread compost or a slow-release fertilizer around it at planting. If you plant it in a container, you will have to water it with water-soluble fertilizer on a regular basis. Since this plant is grown for its foliage, no deadheading is necessary. Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea needs regular watering. The really neat thing about Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea is that it can grow in the sun, part shade, and shade. When growing in the shade, there is more of a green tinge to the leaves.
The foliage of the Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea will last from planting until frost. Since it is a perennial, you can bring the container inside the house to over winter it. Most people in the United States, however, treat it as an annual and replant each spring.
Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
As mentioned above, Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea is a very vigorous plant. Keep it 12-18 inches from other plants so it won’t grow right over them. Sweet Caroline Red Hawk Ipomoea only grows 6-16 inches tall, but it spreads out 20-36 inches.
