- Rare dark purple foliage!
Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Jet Black displays an exceptional foliage interest of dark purple heart-shaped leaves from spring into fall. The foliage can range from deep purple to dark black in color. Ipomoea batatas is commonly known as the sweet potato. This specific sweet potato variety is grown for its ornamental foliage and not for its nutritional value. Relatively short, this plant reaches 6 to 16 inches in height and it can spread vigorously up to 36 inches.
Sweet potatoes are native to South America and thrive in hot and humid growing conditions. This is such a versatile must-have plant for containers and landscapes. It works great as a spiller role in a container or it can blanket any dull landscape. Pair varying textures of foliage and bright flowers with Ipomoea Sweet Caroline, and it is sure to be a perfect container masterpiece.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Jet Black Sweet Potato Vine Care
Ipomoea Sweet Caroline is easy going and relatively maintenance-free. This plant can take a wide range of sunlight from part sun up to full sun. The more sun this plant receives, the darker the foliage becomes. It has average water and soil fertility requirements. Ipomoea Sweet Caroline has a tendency to shade out slower growing plants, (especially in combination plantings) so trim it back at any time. Apply an annual application of compost or fertilizer to the landscape or a regular fertilizing regimen to containers to promote vigorous growth.
This heat-loving annual is only hardy to zones 11. Prolonged cold fall weather and frost will kill outdoor plants. To overwinter, store sweet potato tubers in a dry dark location until spring.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Jet Black Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
If planted in the landscape, allow anywhere from 12 to 18 inches of space between plants. Allow a minimum of 6 inches of space between plants in containers and train vines to cascade over the sides. Use at least a 12 inch or larger container to create your favorite combinations.
