Growing Zones
Pumila Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila') is a showy perennial that features feathery plumes of lavender-pink flowers. The finely cut foliage is attractive and appears fern-like. It grows to 9-12 inches tall and 9-12 inches wide in USDA zones 4-8. Blooms appear in late spring and last through the summer. Pumila Astilbe makes an excellent groundcover.
Pumila Astilbe is deer and rabbit resistant. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds and is beneficial to bees. Pumila Astilbe is a slow-growing plant with a mounding growth habit.
Pumila Astilbe Care
Pumila Astilbe grows well in light shade with dappled sunlight. Ensure that this plant gets no more than 6 hours of filtered sun. Pumila Astilbe has moderately high water consumption needs and should be planted in well-draining soil. The soil should remain moist at all times to avoid leaf browning. Nutrient-rich soil is preferred. Fertilize your Pumila Astilbe in the springtime before buds appear on the plant.
This plant doesn’t like to be over-pruned. Prune your Pumila Astilbe plant lightly in the early spring after the last frost and before buds start to appear. Pumila Astilbe plants can be divided in the early spring about every 3 or 4 years.
Pumila Astilbe Spacing
Space these perennials about 12 inches apart. Pumila Astilbe makes a beautiful groundcover, a lovely container plant, or a front row of borders.
