Pumpkin St John’s Wort is one versatile plant. It is a shrub that can be cutback like a perennial. It can be grown in the garden in large groups to act as a ground cover, especially on slopes. It can be grown in a container year round with an ever changing backdrop of annuals. The yellow flowers attract  pollinators during the summer. The brilliant orange pumpkin like berries attract birds through the winter, All the while the semi-evergreen foliage changes from a very dark green to a rusty color after the first hard frost.

Hypericum are deer and rabbit resistant. Pumpkin is very rust resistant and will stay fresh looking all summer. Extra irrigation is only needed if this plant is grown in a container. Pumpkin St John’s Wort is good for hardiness zones 5-8. In all zones it will perform as a semi-evergreen with year round interest no matter where you place it.

Pumpkin St John’s Wort Care

Soil needs for Hypericum are very broad. All soil textures  will support this plant. Moisture levels can be on the dry side of average. The pH levels it grows in can be acidic, neutral or alkaline. Sunny sites or part- shady sites are fine. Fertilizing is usually not needed. Low maintenance is real with this plant.

Annual pruning of Pumpkin St john’s Wort is merely a light haircut to keep the plants mounding habit and keep it out of the way of others. The best time of year for this light pruning is late in the winter after all of the berries are gone. If Hypericum has been neglected and seems to not be performing as well, a heavy cutting back will rejuvenate these low growing shrubs.

Pumpkin St John’s Wort Spacing

Pumpkin grows to be 2-3 feet wide x 2.5-3 feet tall which makes it good for filling up large areas such as a bankside using as a specimen planted in a container. A spacing of 24-30 inches on center gives this shrub plenty of room to expand.

I received a nice-sized, well-packaged Pumpkin Hypericum (St. John's Wort). It looked like it was in good condition and still even had flowers on it though it is late in the year for this Hypericum. On-line plants are usually pretty small but this one is a good size. I also liked the follow-up from the website telling me how to water, how to plant, etc.

    Pumpkin...

Ordering plants in July is risky especially when they have to travel from Connecticut to Tennessee. Co differing the distance and the heat, the Hypericum Pumpkins did quite well!! I am pleased with the plants. After a few days in the shade, I planted them in the sunny landscape and they are thriving. Packing was very good and prevented damage. Thanks

    Simple...

Posted by Diane Farrington on Jul 09, 2023

I order 2 pumpkin St John’s Wart. Prior to ordering I called customer service who said that the plants were coming from a nursery in CT and I should have them in 2 days. I thought I will take a chance to see how the mail ordering of live plants works and I had enough time to receive and plant before leaving for vacation. After a week or so went by I contacted someone on the on line chat. He said the plants hadn’t shipped yet but I should receive them the week of July 4th. I told him that would be a problem because I was away that week and the person staying home could not be depended upon being responsible for when the plants arrived. So we worked it out that they would be shipped on July 10th so they arrived while I was home. Well we arrived home a little early and sitting probably in the worst place they could be while in a box, with late afternoon hot sun. I never told my daughter to watch out for them because I didn’t know they had been shipped. They were fine and to their credit they are packed beautifully. If I had arrived home when originally scheduled they would have been dead. That is the reason for the 3 stars. The plants are really nice so had the shipping went as planned they would have received 5 stars.
