Punto Rosso False Sunflower (Heliopsis heli. 'Punto Russo') is a native perennial guaranteed to add a bright pop of color to your perennial garden. This plant features bright yellow long lasting flowers from June until October. Punto Russo reaches a height of 18-24 inches tall and spreads 16-20 inches wide.
Punto Russo is beneficial for the whole ecosystem as it provides a great deal of food for bees, butterflies, and birds in your garden. This plant is deer and drought resistant and very cold tolerant. Punto Rosso False Sunflower is low maintenance and hardy in USDA zones 4-9. It fits in perfectly in a meadow, wildlife garden, perennial bed, and container garden.
Punto Rosso False Sunflower Care
Punto Rosso False Sunflower thrives and blooms best in full sun. Still, it is highly adaptable to different sunlight conditions and can grow in partial sun and partial shade. Punto Rosso False Sunflower prefers to receive at least 6 hours of sun daily.
This False Sunflower prefers moist, well-draining soil with a neutral pH. However, it’s highly adaptable to different soil conditions. Although this plant is drought tolerant, it performs best with regular watering. Avoid over-fertilizing, which may encourage more foliage and fewer blooms. Apply a thin layer of compost on the surrounding soil early in the spring.
Pruning can be beneficial to these plants and to your visual display. Pinching off the spent blooms will encourage branching and more flowers to appear. Divide the plant every few years to rejuvenate the roots.
Punto Rosso False Sunflower Spacing
Provide adequate air circulation between plants by spacing them out in natural drifts. Space Punto Rosso False Sunflower plants about 20 inches apart for best results.
