Purple Daydream Loropetalum provides year-round purple foliage in a smaller form that fits front beds, borders, and containers. Loropetalum chinense 'PIILC-III' PP25471 grows in a naturally mounded form with dark burgundy-purple leaves and dark pink, fringe-like spring flowers. It matures at 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, making it useful where older loropetalums would take too much room. We find its best color comes from a few hours of direct sun, especially morning sun in hot regions.
This evergreen Chinese fringe flower comes from a species native to Asia and was selected for compact growth, dark foliage, and a tidy rounded habit. Purple Daydream Loropetalum is hardy in USDA Zones 7-10 and may need winter wind protection near the cold edge of that range. Once established, it has drought tolerance and documented deer resistance, with average pest and disease resistance under good growing conditions. Use it as a low hedge, foundation accent, mass planting, slope shrub, or patio container plant where deep foliage can hold the planting together after spring bloom.
Purple Daydream Loropetalum Care
Plant Purple Daydream Loropetalum in full sun to part shade, with morning sun and light afternoon shade favored in hot Southern gardens. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil that holds moderate moisture. Keep the soil acidic to neutral, about pH 4.0 to 7.0, since alkaline soil can lead to yellowing foliage.
Water deeply after planting and continue regular watering through the first growing season so the root system can spread into the surrounding soil. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but midsummer heat can call for a slow soak when the top few inches of soil dry. Apply a light dose of slow-release fertilizer in early spring or late spring, using an acid-loving plant food if the soil pH trends neutral. Mulch 1 to 2 inches deep over the root zone to conserve moisture and buffer winter temperature swings.
Prune Purple Daydream Loropetalum after spring flowering when shaping is needed. Use thinning cuts to shorten overlong stems back to a side branch or bud, and remove dead or broken branches as soon as they appear. Container plants should be moved to a sheltered place during hard cold snaps at the edge of Zone 7, since roots in pots are more exposed to freezing temperatures.
Purple Daydream Loropetalum Spacing
Space Purple Daydream Loropetalum 3 to 4 feet apart for a low hedge or mass planting, and allow 4 feet of width for a single rounded shrub. Use a container at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes, filled with a high-quality acidic potting mix. Check potted plants often in warm weather and water when the upper layer of soil feels dry.
For companion planting, pair Purple Daydream Loropetalum with sedum, yarrow, tickseed, or bluebeard in sunny beds with good drainage and moderate moisture. Juniper bushes can add evergreen texture nearby, especially on slopes or in foundation plantings with sun exposure. In containers, fan flower, vinca, and marigold make strong seasonal partners because they handle bright light and regular watering in well-drained potting mix.
