Purple De Oro Daylily turns heads with a rich purple flower color with a golden throat. Hemerocallis 'Purple de Oro' grows about 16 to 20 inches tall, with flower scapes reaching near 20 to 24 inches above arching green foliage. The 2.75 to 3 inch blooms open in early to midsummer, then return off and on through the season. We use it at the front of sunny borders because the compact size keeps the flowers easy to see.
This cultivar is often described as the purple counterpart to the well-known Stella D’Oro daylily, with strong rebloom though usually a little less constant than Stella. Purple De Oro Daylily is a dormant daylily, so it performs best in gardens that receive a sustained winter cold period. Each individual flower lasts about one day, but fresh buds keep the clump in color over a long season. Plant it in edging, mass plantings, perennial borders, containers, erosion-control areas, and small garden spaces that need repeat summer bloom.
Purple De Oro Daylily Care
Plant Purple De Oro Daylily in full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sun coaxing the strongest flower production. It grows in clay, loam, poor soil, average soil, and fertile soil when drainage is good. Acidic, neutral, or alkaline pH is acceptable, making this daylily easy to fit into most garden beds.
Soak the root ball at planting. During the first season, provide moderate moisture while the roots settle into the soil. Mature clumps tolerate dry soil and summer humidity, but deep watering during hot rainless weather helps keep foliage cleaner and rebloom stronger. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer or topdress with compost. Expect the foliage to die back in winter, then return from the crown in spring.
Deadhead spent blooms to keep the plant tidy, then remove finished flower scapes once all buds on the stem have opened. Cut back old foliage in late fall after frost or in early spring before new growth rises. Divide crowded clumps every 3 to 4 years in spring or fall, using sections with several fans for the best return.
Purple De Oro Daylily Spacing
Space Purple De Oro Daylily 18 to 24 inches apart for borders, groundcover-style plantings, or mass displays. Use 24 inches between clumps when mixing it among shrubs or taller perennials. For containers, choose a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes and a loose potting mix.
In sunny borders, combine Purple De Oro Daylily with balloon flower and avens, which add different flower shapes while sharing the same well-drained soil preference. Blanket flowers can extend the warm-season color and tolerate the same open, sunny exposure. In containers, use alyssum or verbena around the edge for low seasonal bloom beneath the daylily foliage.
