With its tall purple blooms, this Purple Leia Spike Speedwell will be the star of your garden borders come summer. Held above its erect green stems, the rosy-purple flowers will inject bold color into the garden. Growing to nearly 3 feet high, this veronica is perfect for the middle of a bed and is adored by pollinators. Purple Leia is ideal for filling gaps or for adding structure.

Generally ignored by Bambi and his friends, speedwells are a great country garden perennial, but work equally well in urban environments as well. Originally from Asia and Europe, these plants are hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8. When grown in the right place, this veronica needs little care and provides the most impact when planted out in a group or a drift.

Purple Leia Spike Speedwell Care

Even though Purple Leia Spike Speedwell can tolerate some partial shade, it undoubtedly performs best when given full sun. It is happy in most soils as long as they are free draining. Just avoid any sites prone to waterlogging, as this leads to roots rot. When grown in relatively fertile soil, extra fertilizer is not usually necessary. However, if you try growing this speedwell in poor soil, apply a slow-release, balanced feed in spring to provide the nutrients it needs. Water Purple Leia frequently to prevent the soil from completely drying out over the summer months.

If the faded flower spikes are removed as they go over, you may well be rewarded with some more blooms. As the stems die back after the first frost, they can be cut back to the basal growth and removed. A layer of mulch can be applied around the base of the plant to provide the roots with some winter protection.

Purple Leia Spike Speedwell Spacing

When fully grown, the Purple Leia Spike Speedwell can reach a height of 28-30 inches and a width of 18-20 inches. Often planted in a group, space plants 16-18 inches apart for best impact.
