What is better than a plant that can hold its own and belong in both ornamental and culinary gardens? Not much in the garden world! Purple Sage Plant belongs in many different gardens from cottage to victory. This compact, shrubby perennial has gorgeous, textured, oblong leaves up to 4 inches long. Purple Sage has, you guessed it, beautiful purple leaves alongside grayish-green leaves. While the plant is grown for its colorful and flavorful foliage, Purple Sage Plant does produce beautiful flower spikes of blue in the summertime.
Purple Sage Plant has incredibly aromatic leaves. Used in soups, stews, and garnishes, Purple Sage Plant releases an aroma when the leaves are chopped or distressed. Native to Southern California, this plant is drought resistant and easy to grow. Purple Sage Plant makes a great choice for herb gardens, mixed containers, and borders. It is possible to grow the plant indoors if provided adequate sunlight.
Purple Sage Plant Care
Purple Sage Plant prefers full sun exposure ideally in loamy or clay soil with good drainage. Purple Sage Plant will tolerate a range of soil pHs from acid to alkaline. Be careful not to overwater this plant. If weather conditions are dry and hot, water about once a week, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Purple sage is a light feeder and does not require regular fertilization. Add compost or granular fertilizer at the time of planting to give the plant a nutritional boost.
Purple Sage Plant does not require heavy pruning. The plant can develop woody stems on older growth, which you can trim back by about one-third. Prune back the foliage in early spring to promote rejuvenating new growth. You do not need to regularly deadhead Purple Sage Plant since it does not flower often.
Purple Sage Plant Spacing
Purple Sage Plant can grow to 32 inches tall and 36 inches wide. Space plants 28-32 inches apart for a mass planting.
