Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia hybrid) can add drama to any landscape in early to late summer. If you're familiar with Kniphofia, you know how big and pretty the flowers are as they burst above grassy foliage each year. Pyromania flashpoint flowers are chartreuse yellow and fade to a creamy white, making this an unusual and drought-tolerant plant for nearly any garden use. The blooms last a long time and feed birds after they fade.
With Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker, you get long-lasting bloom, and you can enjoy reblooming on the same plant. Unlike some plants that flower briefly and leave only foliage behind, this clump-forming Red Hot Poker can adorn your landscape for most of the growing season. The plant grows to about 50 inches tall and will attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It generally is ignored by deer and rabbits. It's also drought and salt tolerant, so Kniphofia makes a great border plant for driveways and sidewalks.
Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker Care
Plant your Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker in full sun for best bloom and health. The plant is cold hardy to zone 5 and can take summer heat up to zone 9. Just add a protective layer of mulch in fall for zones 5 and 6. Red Hot Pokers can grow in any soil type but need to be in soil that drains well. You can leave flower stalks for birds or cut them for indoor arrangements. Just trim back the foliage each spring to help stimulate new growth.
Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker Spacing
For a pollinator-friendly border, place your Pyromania Flashpoint Red Hot Poker plants about 2.5 to 3 feet apart from center. Or place one in the middle or back of a container for a thriller plant.
