Pyromania® 'Orange Blaze' (Kniphofia hybrid) brings a bold display of fiery orange flower spikes rising above slender, grass-like foliage. Blooming from early summer through late summer, this perennial adds a striking vertical element to gardens and landscapes. Its upright habit makes it a dynamic choice for borders, cutting gardens, and focal points. As part of the Pyromania® Collection, this variety is compact, well-branched, and loaded with flowers that attract pollinators while resisting browsing by deer and rabbits.
Native to South Africa, Kniphofia thrives in full sun and tolerates drought, heat, and even salty coastal conditions. The spiky flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly gardens. Hardy in zones 5b–9, it performs well in dry, rocky, or sandy soils, making it ideal for xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes. Use it in mass plantings for a dramatic effect, along pathways for structure, or in containers for a bold statement.
Pyromania® Orange Blaze Red Hot Poker Care
Plant in well-drained soil with full sun exposure for the best flowering performance. Although it thrives in dry conditions, occasional watering will promote more abundant blooms. This variety tolerates a range of soil types, from poor and sandy to fertile and loamy, as long as drainage is adequate. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture in warmer climates, while in colder zones, mulch or leaves can protect the crown in winter.
Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage reblooming throughout the summer. In early spring, trim back foliage to stimulate fresh, healthy growth. In colder zones, tie the leaves over the crown in fall to prevent water from collecting and freezing, which can damage the plant.
Pyromania® Orange Blaze Red Hot Poker Spacing
Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart for optimal air circulation and growth. In mass plantings, maintain the same spacing for a uniform look. When growing in containers, use a pot at least 14 inches wide to allow room for root development.
