Ragin' Red™ Flowering Dogwood, or Cornus Florida Ragin' Red™, is a flowering dogwood that is sure to catch anyone’s attention. In late spring, on bare branches, the flower buds open in a stunning display of large, merlot-colored bracts with charming greenish-yellow flowers in the center. When the spring showcase ends, the foliage on this gorgeous tree emerges first as scarlet, next as green, then deepens into dark burgundy. It produces traditional, red, dogwood berries that are a desired food source for wildlife, while at the same time, dazzling with beautiful fall colors. It is a newer variety of Dogwood, and can be compared to Cherokee Chief.
Ragin' Red™ grows from 15 to 20 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. Native to North America, it can thrive in a wide variety of conditions. Wildlife and songbirds love Ragin' Red™ with its up-right spreading branches. It can be used in many ways, even as a foundation tree in a planter. You can add a bright swath of color to existing woodlands, or edge a row of evergreen trees for shelterbelts.
Ragin' Red™ Flowering Dogwood Care
Ragin' Red™ Flowering Dogwood is easy to grow. It should be planted in a protected area that at least receives morning sun. It can handle full sun if planted in areas where high temperatures don’t persist. In areas with higher temperatures, afternoon shade is recommended. Dogwoods grow best in neutral to slightly acidic soil. Maintain consistent moisture levels throughout the year, especially after planting and during the summer heat. To aid in establishment and water retention, add 3 inches of mulch under the tree after planting. Fertilizing is unnecessary in rich, fertile soils.
Your Ragin' Red™ Flowering Dogwood does not have to be pruned. If you would like to shape your tree, or remove any dead or crossing branches, do so after flowering has ceased for the season. Do not deadhead your dogwood.
Ragin' Red™ Flowering Dogwood Spacing
Ragin' Red™ Dogwoods should be spaced 15 to 25 feet between trees. If you want to plant them next to a border or wall make sure you space out 10 to 12 feet from the object. Companion plants underneath dogwoods should be plants that are shade tolerant and grow low to the ground.
