Spirea is one shrub that keeps surprising you with its adaptability. Rainbow Fizz™ Spirea fits into just about any garden scheme. The tiny flossy flowers in the spring make way for loads of brightly colored new foliage growth throughout the summer. Just about every color of the rainbow, besides blue, is represented on one small sized, deciduous shrub.
Spirea is exceptionally drought resistant and pest resistant. Deer and rabbits walk right on by these beauties. Planted as a low growing, informal hedge or in groups at the front of a mixed garden bed, Spireas add a pop of color throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Rainbow Fizz™ Spirea Care
Spireas really like to be in full sun. That way their foliage can be at its brightest. Average or poor texture is acceptable. Spirea grows vigorously in even your toughest situation. Soil pH is best somewhere between neutral and alkaline. Well-drained, moist soil is needed to establish Spirea. When these shrubs are well established, they are very drought tolerant. Seaside planting and windy sites are not a challenge for Rainbow Fizz™
Pruning Rainbow Fizz™ is minimal and only needed to keep the shrub tidy. The mounding growth is built into this shrub. Rainbow Fizz™ is resistant to diseases such as verticillium wilt. Fertilizing should be done early in the spring as the new leaves emerge. A well balanced, slow release feed will keep Spirea happy. Mulching with organic compost or leaves in the fall will add to the nutrition and moisture holding abilities of the soil. No more than 1-2 inches of compost should be applied at one time.
Rainbow Fizz™ Spirea Spacing
Spirea look best when planted in groups or as a low-growing hedge. Rainbow Fizz™ reaches a height of 3-4 feet and a width of 3-4 feet. Spacing is recommended at 3 feet center on center when planting in a group. Planting Rainbow Fizz™ in garden planters is very effective and makes them an extremely low-maintenance, seasonally colored container shrub. A pot with an 18 inch diameter is recommended.
