Commonly called ‘White Clips’ Carpathian Bellflowers are a relatively easy perennial to grow in your full sun garden. Sporting pure white, open faced flowers suspended on wiry stems above dark green foliage, this is a petite plant for your informal cottage garden. It also performs well in a rock garden setting and is an attraction to bees and hummingbirds. The beautiful bright white blooms literally blanket the foliage, so don’t be concerned about the miniature size of the overall plant. This hardy perennial will also spread over the years, becoming an effective ground cover. It reseeds easily as well as spreads on rhizomes beneath the soil.
Native to the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe, Campanula grows best in cool climates with bright abundant sunshine. They are very short lived when grown in hot humid weather with night time temperatures consistently above 70 degrees, so Midwest, Northern and MidSouth gardeners will appreciate this mini ferocious bloomer the most. It can handle winter temperatures well below zero and return again in the spring, ready to impress you with its ‘flower power’.
Rapido White Carpathian Bellflower Care
Care of Carpathian Bellflower consists of planting them in full sun, in rich, well composted organic, well-draining soil. In hotter regions of the South, be sure to plant them in a location with some afternoon shade. Fertilize them at least two times a year, once in the spring and again in the mid season, but not at all after September to avoid creating new growth that will get wiped out by hard freezes. Use a liquid or granular fertilizer with a ratio of 5-10-5 for best results. Water regularly during dry periods and avoid getting foliage wet unless there is plenty of sun to dry them off for the day. Soil pH is not a concern for Campanula as they can thrive in all types of soil including extremely acidic.
Deadheading will result in prolonged flowering. Flowers will want to go to seed, so clip them off when spent so that the plant will focus more on growing roots and powering up for the next bloom season. Use a good quality pine mulch to prepare for winter in harsh winter regions. You may be able to extend your perennial into Zone 3 with careful winter preparations.
Rapido White Carpathian Bellflower Spacing
Space your plants about 5 to 8 inches apart. Campanula will only grow to about 7 inches tall and spread out to about 8 inches, but remember they can spread via reseeding and on underground rhizomes. These lovely plants make a great ground cover under taller perennials that can handle some competition for nutrients like daylilies and coral bells.
