What a yummy daylily Raspberry Eclipse is. Showy, raspberry colored flowers have a lavender band surrounding a yellow throat. Ruffled edges with a narrow lavender band and lemon yellow picotee edges complete the show. Oh, and did we mention fragrant? What’s not to like? The flowers are 5 ½ inches wide and they start blooming in July and continue to rebloom into late summer. The flowers grow on what’s called scapes. Cut a scape or two for an indoor arrangement. Each flower lasts a day.
A robust grower, Raspberry Eclipse gets about 30 inches tall and up to 24 inches wide. The leaves on this perennial are semi-evergreen. The daylily tolerates any soil. Because it is salt tolerant, it is a good selection to plant near pavement that’s treated with deicers in winter. It isn’t bothered by juglone, either, so it can be planted near black walnut trees. Daylilies are rabbit resistant, but they are friendly to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Raspberry Eclipse Daylily Care
Daylilies are very forgiving plants and among the easiest perennials to grow. Grow in full sun (6+ hours). They are not picky about the soil and they have average water needs. Most flowering plants do best when watered during hot dry spells. Tidy up the plants by deadheading (removing spent flowers).
Divide the plant every three or four years. Dig the clump and divide it into pieces with at least three eyes, or growth points. A soil knife or serrated bread knife does this very well. Divide in spring or fall. Water well after planting. Some older varieties of daylilies tolerate part sun, but newer ones like Raspberry Eclipse give the best show in full sun. They also tend to spread a bit slower than older varieties.
Raspberry Eclipse Daylily Spacing
In a 12-inch wide container or larger, plant Raspberry Eclipse as the thriller. Surround with a few sun-loving annuals such as Lanai verbena. In the ground, plant in clumps of three to five about 18 inches apart. Or, plant as a specimen.
