Growing Zones
Springtime blooms are the hallmark of Mountain Laurel, and the Raspberry Glow Mountain Laurel delivers. Showy dark pink star-shaped flowers bloom in late May and open to reveal light pink centers. The blooms grow on woody stems along with dark, lustrous green foliage. The narrow leaves come to a point and slightly curl for added dimension. This plant is a broadleaf evergreen, so the foliage will stay in place throughout the winter.
Mountain Laurel is native to the eastern U.S. and has an upright, mounded growth habit. This beauty will grow about 5 feet tall and wide, so it is an excellent choice to line a foundation wall or property boundary. Group several together for a burst of spring color or use as a specimen plant. The hardy Raspberry Glow Mountain Laurel grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Raspberry Glow Mountain Laurel Care
This shrub needs fertile soil that is slightly acidic and well-drained. Water weekly or when the top several inches of soil dry out. Plant in an area that receives at least 4 hours of sunlight. Apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring, or test the soil and feed the plant using acidic plant food if the soil pH is high.
Prune the shrub as needed to maintain the shape after the flowers fade. Mountain Laurel can start to appear leggy after a few years, but a rejuvenating trim will reset the plant and allow for a full look.
Raspberry Glow Mountain Laurel Spacing
Raspberry Glow Mountain Laurel will reach 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Feature in a 12- to 14-inch container or space plants 4 to 5 feet apart to create a border or mass planting.
