Growing Zones
If you are looking for a compact shrub, the heavy-blooming Raspberry Perfection® Abelia could fit the bill perfectly. Botanically called Abelia chinensis 'Abesrpras', this abelia produces a mass of light pink flowers that contrast well against its dark pink sepals. A compact form and a height of 3 to 4 feet tall make this abelia ideal for a variety of garden uses.
The flowers of the Raspberry Perfection® Abelia are a bee and butterfly magnet when they bloom from late spring until the fall. A semi-evergreen shrub, this abelia is considered winter hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9. It naturally forms a neat and rounded habit and requires less clipping than other varieties. Raspberry Perfection® is well suited to foundation planting, or growing in a mixed border or large container.
Raspberry Perfection® Abelia Care
The Raspberry Perfection® Abelia requires full sun for it to thrive and put on the best flowering display. It prefers well-drained, fertile and moist soil that is neutral to acidic. Water deeply and often until established, after which it can tolerate some dry spells. Even though the Raspberry Perfection® Abelia is a light feeder, it will benefit from a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring.
The Raspberry Perfection® Abelia needs minimal pruning to keep it in check. Lightly trim this shrub to shape in late winter or early spring. Container-grown specimens will need more frequent irrigation to keep the soil moist over the hotter months.
Raspberry Perfection® Abelia Spacing
When fully grown, the Raspberry Perfection® Abelia can reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Multiple shrubs can be planted out at a spacing of 2 to 3 feet depending on how close you would like them to knit together.
