A stunning addition to a wildlife garden, the Red Feather Arrowwood Viburnum is a magnet for native pollinators and birds. A cultivar of the species Viburnum dentatum, this shrub is a multi-season showstopper. In spring, two-toned maroon and green foliage emerges. Flattened heads of white flowers appear in June and develop into purple berries in late summer. The growing season ends with stunning fall color as the leaves become a brilliant scarlet red.

Red Feather is a reliable, hardy, and low-maintenance shrub choice for many sites. It is a variety of a shrub that is native to North America and requires at least two specimens of Viburnum dentatum to ensure fruit develops. Groups of this viburnum make for an outstanding hedge. It is also an excellent choice for a specimen plant surrounded by smaller perennials.

Red Feather Arrowwood Viburnum Care

Position this viburnum in full to part sun. It can thrive in many types of soil and in a range of soil pH, but prefers a site with good drainage and ample organic matter. The Red Feather Arrowwood Viburnum will perform best in average-to-moist soil. Water the shrub regularly during the period of establishment and then deeply during extended periods of drought, as this plant prefers to not dry out. Viburnums are not particularly heavy feeders, but can benefit from an annual application of a slow-release, tree-and-shrub fertilizer in the spring.

The best time to prune this shrub is in spring following the flush of new growth and blooming. Thin out any unsightly, old, or rubbing branches and cut back up to one-third of the plant to maintain a tidy shape.

Red Feather Arrowwood Viburnum Spacing

This viburnum reaches a height of 8 to 10 feet with a similar spread once mature. Space multiple plants 8 to 10 feet apart for a hedge or provide more space for this shrub to use it as a specimen.
