Growing Zones
Daylilies are a traditional Cottage Garden plant that is extremely low maintenance and can tolerate a wide range of hardiness zones. Red Hot Returns Daylily blooms non-stop from June to September and packs a dramatic punch of color with its ruby red petals and lime green throat. The compact mound of grass-like foliage provides a lovely dense border for the edge of any cottage garden, rock garden or contemporary urban garden. Red Hot Returns makes a great groundcover at the base of vines, such as Clematis, that prefer a shady base and sunny face.
Red Hot Returns is smaller in stature than old fashioned varieties and will require far less staking or deadheading to keep the flowers going all summer. Daylilies perform well in large groups or as single specimens in a container. When container grown, these herbaceous perennials will need much more attention to watering and fertilizing than when planted in a garden bed. Daylilies are rarely bothered by pests and diseases. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Red Hot Returns Daylily Care
Red Hot Returns will provide the most blooms with the brightest color when planted in full sun. A garden with shade early or later in the afternoon will be acceptable. Soil should be well drained, but moisture retentive. An annual top dressing of organic compost or leaves in the fall will both protect the plant crowns from a harsh winter and enrich the surrounding soil over time, helping the plants become more drought tolerant.
Annual maintenance for daylilies involves a simple cutting back of the previous years’ foliage. A hard cut back to 6 inches above the soil is best to make way for new, lush foliage. Fertilizing at the same time is recommended. A slow release, well balanced food will encourage both good leaf growth and flower bud formation. Regular deadheading throughout the summer will also encourage Red Hot Returns to continue blooming. Dividing should be done every 3-4 years to keep plants vigorous and full.
Red Hot Returns Daylily Spacing
Red Hot Returns is a smaller sized Daylily with a mature height of 18-24 inches and a spread of 20-24 inches. Space the plants at 18 inches on center when planting in groups.
