Growing Zones
The Red Lark Delphinium, or larkspur, is a tall plant with a strong visual impact. The 2.5 feet tall stems are thin and feature double blooms in a shade of reddish-coral. The flowers engulf the plant, creating a wall of blooms during the spring and summer. Medium-green basal foliage is lobed, giving the plant a feathery texture.
Delphinium is a staple for mixed beds and borders, lending a cottage garden feel to any space. Plant along a foundation wall or create a lovely mass planting. Trim the stems to feature the flowers in an arrangement. Pollinators also enjoy the beautiful blooms, but deer and rabbits leave Delphinium alone. Grow Red Lark Delphinium as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Red Lark Delphinium Care
The Red Lark Delphinium is an easy-to-grow plant that needs full to partial sun. An area that recipes 4 to 6 hours of sunlight will support strong stems and abundant blooms. Water Delphinium when the top few inches of soil are dry. Fertilize with a product with a 5-12-5 NPK ratio in the early spring and again after the flowers fade.
Deadhead Red Lark Delphinium to clean up the look of the plant and redirect energy into the plant to encourage another flush of flowers. The growth will die after the first heavy frost. All of the growth can be removed in the early winter.
Red Lark Delphinium Spacing
Red Lark Delphinium reaches 30 to 36 inches tall and spreads 18 to 24 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 18 to 24 inches apart to create a dense wall of greenery and flowers.
