Growing Zones
Red Riding Hood Windflower, or Anemone Fantasy™ 'Red Riding Hood', is vigorous, brightly colored perennial with thick, fuchsia-red blooms offset by yellow button centers and stamens. The distinct petals of the Red Riding Hood Windflower are held on thick, wiry stems above a dense mound of velvety green foliage. Their blooms begin in midsummer and carry all the way into fall. This variety of anemone grows from 12 to 18 inches in height and has a spread of 18 to 24 inches. In fall, the seed heads of anemone look like fluffy cotton balls, further adding to its season interest.
Red Riding Hood Windflower is a fast-growing flower that has a compact, upright form with a multitude of blooms. Bees and other critical pollinators will appreciate its late summer bloom when nectar is in short supply. It is deer and rabbit resistant and makes an excellent cut flower that can be used in natural bouquets and arrangements.
Red Riding Hood Windflower Care
Your Red Riding Hood Windflower needs partial sun to dappled shade, and moist, well-drained soil to thrive. After it is established, it takes average water. You should feed your anemone yearly with organic fertilizer.
It can be pruned for shape and size in the late fall after the first hard frost. If you live in a colder area, your anemones may benefit from a layer of mulch.
Red Riding Hood Windflower Spacing
Red Riding Hood Windflower is a wonderful border plant and works well planted alongside other late summer to early fall bloomers. Anemone make excellent container plants and are bright, beautiful additions to flower pots as both a ‘filler’ and a ‘thriller’. Its extended bloom and dense foliage time also makes it good for mass plantings in areas where weed control is needed. Red Riding Hood Windflower should be spaced 6 inches apart at planting.
