The Red Sensation Hydrangea is a big leaf Hydrangea that is aptly named and will provide dependable color to a landscape. Bold red flowers bloom in round orb-like clusters. The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Red Sensations' produces showy flowers that last for weeks, and this stunner reblooms, so you can enjoy months of continuous flowers. Flowers first emerge in May and rebloom in the summer. Green foliage with wide serrated edges gives the shrub a full and lush appearance.
The upright, rounded form mimics the shape of the flower clusters. Its compact size makes the Red Sensation Hydrangea excellent for foundation plantings. It can be used to create a low hedge along a deck or bordering a driveway. The full form defines a space without obstructing sight lines. Grow the Red Sensation Hydrangea in zones 4 through 8.
Red Sensation Hydrangea Care
Plant in full to partial sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal in the more southern reaches of the growing range. Red Sensation prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. New plants need consistently damp soil, while established plants need one inch of water weekly. Water during a dry period to support a continued bloom cycle. Fertilize in early spring and again in early summer to support new growth and encourage plenty of blooms.
The Red Sensation Hydrangea sets buds in late summer, so prune after the flowers fade but before new buds appear. Be mindful not to remove buds, which could impact next year’s bloom cycle. Remove dead or damaged growth at any time.
Red Sensation Hydrangea Spacing
Mature plants stand 3 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 3 feet apart to create a dense hedge, or grow one Red Sensation Hydrangea in an 18-inch-wide container.
