Red Star™ St. John's Wort, or Hypericum Inodorum Red Star™ is a deciduous shrub with masses of yellow buttercup flowers that bloom in the spring. These cheery clouds of flowers are followed by vibrant glossy berries, which is where Red Star™ gets its name. Both are excellent to provide structure and width to cut flower arrangements and bouquets. Red Star™ foliage has ovate, green leaves that form into an attractive 2.5 to 3 foot mound with floating berries on wiry stems.
Red Star™ St. John's Wort is rust resistant and easy to grow. It grows at a medium rate, and its branches spread upright. It is low-maintenance and generally pest and disease free. This shrub is deer and rabbit resistant and perfect for long-lasting color in your garden. They make stunning hedges and borders when grown together.
Red Star™ St. John's Wort Care
This beautiful shrub prefers dry to average watering and is drought-tolerant. They work great in low-water gardens. Red Star™ St. John's Wort can tolerate most types of soils, but needs to have very good drainage. It should be planted in areas with full sun or partial shade, in an area with moderate shelter from damaging winds.
You can prune your Red Star™ St. John's Wort as soon as it has finished blooming, or in late winter when the berries start to fall. Cutting back dead branches and leaves before new growth can start is ideal. You should prune off around one third of the total shrub. Pruning your Red Star™ St. John's Wort will increase its flowering in the future. Consider a thick mulch at the base of the plant to protect it during winter months.
Red Star™ St. John's Wort Spacing
Red Star™Shrubs can be grown as a single plant or in groups. They should be spaced from 2 to 3 feet apart at the center when planting. They are a beautiful indoor, or outdoor option, and grow well in pots and containers. Because they grow upright, they should be the thriller in your container combination.
