Red is the color of Fall. Red Wall® Virginia creeper does an excellent job at capturing the essence of Autumn. Parthenocissus quinquefolia is native to the Eastern US and is reliably hardy up to zones 3. This fast-growing vine can scale up to 30 feet and create a stunning display of red Fall foliage. In the Spring, leaves are luscious and green, sending out tiny green flower blooms that eventually turn into purple berries. By Winter, the leaves have fallen and the berries are left to be enjoyed by wildlife.
The most stunning feature is, of course, it’s red crimson leaves combined with its vigorous growth habit. This tough native is great at scaling fences and can act as a groundcover, but avoid planting near buildings. Once established, Virginia Creeper is extremely drought tolerant and can adapt to poor and salt-contaminated soils. Instead of looking at that hideous fence along the road, why not plant Virginia Creeper? In no time, that fence will become a beautiful naturalized green wall and the birds will get to enjoy a tasty treat. It’s a win-win situation!
Red Wall® Virginia Creeper Care
This US native will thrive on its own without any oversight. As long as this plant has full to partial sun and it has well-draining soil, then no oversight is needed. Expect average watering needs and an annual application of fertilizer or compost. Some maintenance may be required to keep its growth in check, but that depends on where it is planted. For example, if Virginia Creeper was grown alongside a large fenced-in area, then it could just be left to grow wild.
Trimming can be done once a year in early Spring. Use sheers or a weed trimmer to remove last year’s growth. Also, trim any problem areas that may be exhibiting fungal or bacterial spots. Leaves can become too crowded and trimming can help to increase airflow.
Red Wall® Virginia Creeper Spacing
Be sure to give this plant some space. When planting alongside a fence, space each plant 6 to 10 feet apart. Since this plant is such a vigorous grower, over time it will eventually take over 30 feet of the fence. If you're in a hurry to completely cover an eyesore, then space plants closer to 6 feet apart.
