Growing Zones
The Regent Serviceberry is a lovely flowering shrub that makes a strong visual impact while providing an abundant crop of tasty berries. Showy 5-petaled flowers that grow in clusters bloom in April. While blooming, the shrub will be covered with so many flowers that it will look like a cloud. After the flowers of the Amelanchier alnifolia die back, the blooms will be replaced by green foliage, and by June, the small, blue-colored berries will be ready to pick. The foliage turns a deep golden hue in the fall. The hardy Regent Serviceberry grows as a perennial in USDA zones 2 through 9.
Regent Serviceberry Care
Space shrubs 5 feet apart and select an area with full sun to partial shade. Expect more flowers and berries when grown in higher levels of light. Soil should be acidic and moist but well-drained. Prune the plant in late fall or early spring.
Growing Regent Serviceberry
Serviceberries produce a light yield for the first two years. Berry production will increase each year until the plant reaches maturity, around eight years, at which time the plant will consistently produce a full crop. This rounded shrub will be 4 to 6 feet wide and tall.
Growing Regent Serviceberry in Containers
Plant the Regent Serviceberry in a bed or border. Animals will feed on the berries, so if you intend to harvest the fruit for jellies or jams, consider planting near your home or a busy area, so animals may be less inclined to visit the plant.
Watering Regent Serviceberry
Newly planted bushes will need one to two gallons of water per week. Established plants will only need water during a drought or extended dry period.
Feeding Regent Serviceberry
Feed this plant using a 5-3-3 fertilizer every six weeks, starting in the spring until the fall. Routine feeding will support new growth.
