Once common in every garden landscape the spirea has fallen somewhat out of favor, until now. This new cultivar is sure to bring about a Renaissance in the garden for this old fashioned beauty. Long, slender, arching branches are filled with clusters of tiny white blooms in early spring on a 5 to 7 foot tall shrub with a spread of 6 to 8 feet. The foliage transforms from green to orange-red in fall.
A low maintenance, deciduous shrub with a compact growth habit boasts a longer bloom period than old fashioned varieties. Would make a wonderful foundation planting or be used to soften the harsh look of a fence. May attain an adult size that would eventually be too large for any pot or container although it would be possible to do so. A pot or container at minimum of 3 feet high and 3 feet wide would be appropriate. Disease and deer resistant, winter hardy in zones 3 to 7.
Renaissance Spirea Care
This spiraea would do best growing in full sun in an area with average, well-drained soil but is tolerant of many soil types. It would benefit from an occasional application of an all purpose granular fertilizer in late winter.
No deadheading needed of the light and airy blossoms on this spiraea. An occasional pruning right after flowering may be required to maintain its rounded, arching shape followed by a renewal pruning every 8 years or so.
Renaissance Spirea Spacing
This spiraea does well when planted 5 to 6 feet apart. It would make an excellent hedge or privacy screening. It is possible to grow this spiraea in a pot or container as long as attention is paid to its size at maturity.
