Rheinland Astilbe is an early blooming stunner that puts on a show from mid-May to late June. This perennial boasts tall, pale pink flower spikes that have an airy quality but still provide a pop of color. The tiny flowers of the Astilbe japonica are a show-stopper, but the foliage also adds to the appeal of this plant. Deeply lobed, dark green foliage has a slight sheen and continues to provide visual interest after the blooms fade.
Plant Astilbe in mass plantings, beds, or borders to add height, color, and texture. As a mounded plant, the Rheinland Astilbe has a full appearance. This plant has a striking appearance in a landscape, but trim the flower spikes to feature in arrangements. The flowers attract pollinators, but foraging animals tend to leave the feathery flowers and foliage alone. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Rheinland Astilbe Care
This plant does best in part shade, but it can handle limited amounts of full sun. In warm areas, plant in a spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Use rich, acidic, and well-drained soil. This plant can handle damp conditions but let the soil mostly dry out before watering. Apply a balanced fertilizer to support healthy growth and plenty of blooms in the spring.
The greenery will die back after the first frost but leave the dead growth to protect the roots from cold winter temperatures. Remove damaged or dead growth in the spring.
Rheinland Astilbe Spacing
Rheinland Astilbe is an upright, mounded plant that will grow 24 to 30 inches tall and wide. Space plants 24 to 30 inches apart to create a full, dense planting.
