The River Birch Clump is native to North America, has a graceful form, and is stunning to admire year-round. The elliptical leaves have toothed edges, a green hue on the top, and a silvery-white underside. The foliage of the Betula nigra turns vibrant yellow by fall. The River Birch Clump continues to put on a lovely exhibit after the leaves drop. The layered, peeling bark is eye-catching and puts on a showy display in winter after the leaves fall.

This durable tree can handle damp conditions that are unsuitable for many other plants. Plant the River Birch Clump along a stream or pond bank or in areas with poor drainage. This tree is useful for erosion control. The rounded, compact habit and arching branches create a full and dense form. Grow the River Birch Clump in zones 4 through 9.

River Birch Clump Care

The River Birch Clump needs at least 6 hours of sunlight and plenty of water. Damp conditions are ideal, and this tree cannot handle a drought or dry period. The ideal location will be naturally wet. River Birch needs consistently moist soil with an acidic pH. It is not a heavy feeder and only needs fertilizer every few years. Fertilize in the spring using a balanced plant food as needed.

The River Birch Clump will rarely require pruning but you should remove dead or damaged branches as they appear. Time pruning for late fall and winter when the tree is dormant. Springtime pests can enter the tree more easily if there are fresh pruning wounds in the spring and summer.

River Birch Clump Spacing

The River Birch Clump is a fast grower and can stand 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide. Space multiple trees 30 feet apart so there is plenty of room for the branches to spread.
