Growing Zones
Robin™ Holly has a definite holiday vibe during the fall and winter when dark red berries emerge. The vibrant berries stand out against the dark green, glossy foliage that features widely spaced spines along the edges. While this evergreen shines during the holidays, it is a stunning and low-maintenance plant to be enjoyed all year. New foliage emerges in the spring and is maroon in color before transitioning to dark green, ensuring visual interest all year long. The upright plant, also known as Ilex hybrid 'Conin,' naturally maintains a pyramid shape reminiscent of a pine tree.
This plant is certainly a looker, but it is also versatile. Use this shrub as a screen, hedge, barrier, or specimen planting. Robin™ Holly is also a great container plant, making it easier to integrate the plant into your holiday decor. Holly is deer-resistant, and once established, the plant is also drought-tolerant. Robin™ Holly grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 10.
Robin™ Holly Plant Care
Robin™ Holly can comfortably live in full sun to part shade. Select a spot that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight during the summer. This plant has medium water needs, so water when the top few inches of the soil dry out. Established plants will not require much assistance, but make sure to water the Holly during an extended dry spell. Use well-draining, slightly acidic soil.
Prune the Holly bush in early spring before new growth starts to appear. The tree naturally maintains a cone-like shape, so it is not generally necessary to shape the plant, but you can clean up the appearance if you prefer. Fed in early spring using a slow-release fertilizer.
Robin™ Holly Plant Spacing
Mature Robin™ Holly reaches 15 to 20 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide at the base. Space plants 6 feet apart to create a hedge or screen planting. If you want to maintain distance between plants or buildings, plant this Holly at least 12 feet apart.
