Rock Candy® Coral Beardtongue is a hummingbird magnet in a truly compact plant, so you lure pollinators to the front of a border or pot without sacrificing space. Penstemon barbatus ‘Balrocoral’ stays around 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide, sending up short, sturdy spikes loaded with bell-shaped coral blooms over a long season from spring through fall. The coral tone is warm and distinct, sitting between pink and orange so it pops against green foliage and plays well with both cool and hot palettes. Our designers lean on this one when customers ask for a small perennial that still brings the “stop and look” factor.
Heat tolerance and drought tolerance make it a reliable choice for sunny beds that bake, plus it stays attractive in containers during dry spells. The upright habit keeps flowers visible and easy to enjoy at eye level along paths. Bees and butterflies work the blooms, and hummingbirds tend to patrol it once it starts flowering. Its tight footprint is the defining advantage over taller penstemons that belong in the back and can look lanky up close. Use it as edging in a sunny border, tuck it between stepping stones in wider beds, or group three to five plants for a concentrated coral punch.
Rock Candy® Coral Beardtongue Care
Give Rock Candy® Coral Beardtongue full sun for the best bloom count and the most compact growth. It adapts to many soil types, including clay, as long as drainage is good; target a pH from about 6.0 to 7.5. Plant with the crown even with the surrounding soil and keep mulch pulled back an inch or two from the stems. During the first season, water when the top 2 inches of soil dry out so roots develop deeply rather than staying shallow. Once established, it prefers less irrigation and handles short dry periods well. Fertilize once a month through the growing season, using a modest rate to avoid floppy growth.
Snip off finished flower spikes to keep the plant neat and to encourage more bloom. In early spring, cut back any old stems after you see fresh growth at the base.
Rock Candy® Coral Beardtongue Spacing
Space plants 6–12 inches apart, depending on whether you want a tight edging or individual clumps. For containers, start with a 10–12 inch pot for one plant, or use a wider bowl for a small grouping. Combine it with Salvia nemorosa, blanket flower, and creeping sedum for a sun-loving mix that supports pollinators and keeps color coming through the season.
