The soft pink flowers of the Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue will be a joy to behold when they burst forth in spring. A compact perennial that grows to around 12 inches tall, Penstemon barbatus is ideal for a variety of garden uses. Pink spires are held upright upon green foliage and will continue to bloom until mid-summer.
The Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue is tough, easy to care for, and suitable for growing in zones 5 to 8. Both heat and drought tolerant once established, this perennial is also loved by pollinators and hummingbirds. Perfect for lining a pathway or growing en masse at the front of a border, Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue also grows well in a container.
Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue Care
Planting the Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue in full sun is best for it to thrive. When it comes to the soil, this penstemon requires a free-draining substrate as it will not tolerate wet roots. Even though drought tolerant at maturity, watering during dry and hot spells is recommended. As a light feeder, fertilizing is not strictly necessary. However, a potassium-rich feed can be applied in the fall if desired.
As the flowers fade you can remove the spires to encourage a new flush. Old foliage can be cut back in the fall.
Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue Spacing
When given the right conditions, the Rock Candy Light Pink Beardtongue can grow to a height and spread of around 12 inches. For a mass of color, you can plant this penstemon in a group with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches apart.
