Growing Zones
Who needs grass when you can carpet a landscape with an easy-care, drought-tolerant perennial like Rock ‘N Low Boogie Woogie Stonecrop Sedum. This little succulent gives gardeners plenty of bang for the buck. Growing only 6 to 8 inches high but spreading to about 18 inches per plant, this sedum sports bright yellow and cream flowers in summer. After flowering, the fleshy foliage stays green, adding color to containers, garden beds, and rock gardens all year.
In zones 3 through 9, this stonecrop is a perennial and perfect for spreading around rocks, garden bed edges, border, or taller plants. It can be an effective groundcover, cutting weeds and adding year-round interest. Bees and butterflies are attracted to Rock ‘N Low’s flowers. Rabbits resist them, but beware of deer. The plant also is salt tolerant. All the gardener has to do is give this sedum plenty of sun and soil that drains well, and the sedum does the rest, spreading out in a lush but natural looking mound.
Rock 'N Low Boogie Woogie Stonecrop Sedum Care
Like most succulents, stonecrop sedum is an easy plant to care for. Although it needs a little extra water in the first week or two after planting, it usually needs no watering after it’s established, except in extreme drought. In fact, overwatering can damage the plant much more than letting it dry out. Be sure to plant your sedum where it does get lots of sun, however. If you live on the cool side of its hardiness zones, plant your sedum where it gets good winter sun; placing it up against a rock or south-facing building will help retain heat.
Rock ‘N Low grows best in average to poor soil. The soil needs to drain well, so if using the sedum as a container filler, place it with other low-water plants and avoid using a rich, water-retaining mix. Do not fertilize sedum; it thrives on neglect. If desired, you can trim the plant to shape it after it’s done flowering in summer.
Rock 'N Low Boogie Woogie Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
For a groundcover effect, plant several of these sedums together, accounting for their mature size. Space them about 16 to 18 inches apart to give them room to grow and breathe.
