At only about 6 inches high, Rocky Road Grape Spring Phlox makes a huge statement in the landscape. The low-growing ground cover explodes with deep purple flowers in spring on small mounding plants that spread to nearly 3 feet across. Although one of these plants can make a statement in a rock garden or flower bed, the best effect comes when planted as a group. With a border or mass planting, the effect can be seen from far away or enjoyed by you, bees, and butterflies right up close.
Like all creeping phlox, Rocky Road is an evergreen perennial. So even once it stops blooming in summer, you can have year-round interest and groundcover for color and weed suppression. This pretty phlox is drought tolerant once it is established. It is a perfect plant to tuck into a rock garden or on a sunny slope. It’s also salt tolerant, so it can survive in coastal areas. Grow this pretty perennial in zones 4 through 8.
Rocky Road Grape Spring Phlox Care
Plant Rocky Road Grape Spring Phlox in spring or fall, avoiding frost. Be sure to choose a sunny spot for best health and flowering, with a little afternoon shade in hotter areas. It can thrive in nearly any type of soil, but will appreciate soil that drains well so the roots don’t get waterlogged. Water the new plant regularly in its first season and then cut back the next year.
The mature plant might need no irrigation during seasons with regular rain. Add a layer of organic compost each spring to feed the plant and a thin layer of mulch. Do not mulch too heavily around its needle-thin foliage. There is no need to deadhead the flowers, but shearing off the faded flowers in fall will make it look tidier. Divide your phlox every few years if its growth seems too dense or spreads into an unwanted area.
Rocky Road Grape Spring Phlox Spacing
Space your phlox at least 2 to 3 feet apart, closer to 2 feet if you want a mass of flowers or a colorful low border.
