The Rocky Road Violet Blue Spring Phlox, also known as the Phlox Hybrida, is the perfect perennial for drier environments. With small flowers of varying blue and violet shades against green foliage, the vibrant petals stand out easily and will attract an array of butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. These beautiful perennials will reach a height of no more than 6 inches but can gain a substantial width of about 36 inches. With this plant, you can expect new flowers to bloom in the latter half of spring.
Native to North America, the fragrant and evergreen Rocky Road Violet Blue Spring Phlox is both drought and deer resistant. However, you may need to watch out for aphids, thrips, and spider mites as these can damage your perennial. Additionally, your plant may be susceptible to certain fungal pathogens including Botrytis, Phoma, Anthracnose, mildews, Thielaviopsis, Colletotrichum, and Fusarium. Fortunately, these perennials are fairly simple to grow and won’t require much maintenance on your behalf. You can use them for rock gardens, slopes, mass planting, borders, and beds. With their compressed and spreading growth habit, they will cover the ground around them.
Rocky Road Violet Blue Spring Phlox Plant Care
These perennials benefit the most from full sun exposure for at least 6 hours each day. You can use gritty, neutral, and well-drained soil with a pH of 7 when planting. Not much watering is required, just enough to keep the soil moderately moist or just slightly dry. To promote healthy growth, you can use fertilizer once a month.
You can shear your Rocky Road Violet Blue Spring Phlox back and get rid of any lifeless leaves at the beginning of summer after its blooming period has finished. Doing so will make it easier for your plant to grow thicker foliage and bloom new flowers.
Rocky Road Violet Blue Spring Phlox Plant Spacing
When planting these perennials, it is important to leave roughly 34 to 38 inches of space between each one to allow for comfortable growth.
