Growing Zones
Rosy pink and purple blooms rise 2 feet above the grass-like foliage of Rosy Returns Daylily (Hemerocallis hybrid). That alone would make this daylily a favorite of gardeners in zones 4 through 9. But Rosy Returns offers more--it boasts long-lasting blooms in early summer and a second rush of blooms for nearly continuous color from early summer through early fall. The flowers’ yellow throats and rosy petals attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
The color and pollinator attraction of this award-winning daylily are enough to make you want to place several in a patio container or as a border where you can see them best. Add to that a fragrance from the flower, and consider placing several throughout the garden where you can stop and sniff. These easy-care perennials work well as mass plantings, too, for a rosy field of big blooms. They’re also salt tolerant and rabbit resistant.
Rosy Returns Daylily Care
Rosy Returns will flower best if given at least 6 hours of sun a day. In the hotter zones of its growing region, it can benefit from a little shade in the afternoon. Otherwise, choose a mostly sunny spot with just about any soil type and plant your daylilies. They do best if planted in early spring, but might survive winter if planted in fall at least 30 days before the first frost hits. If your soil is very sandy, work a little compost in to help retain some water.
Water regularly after planting, gradually increasing time between. Daylilies use average water. Deadhead spent flowers every few days to keep blooms coming. In fall, after they finish blooming, cut the leaves to a few inches above the ground and mulch with straw to keep roots warm if you live in cooler zones of the plant’s growing region.
Rosy Returns Daylily Spacing
Space your plants for a border or mass planting based on their mature size to cut back on the need to thin or divide clumps. That means placing the daylilies about 18 to 24 inches apart from center to center.
