Gorgeous, violet-purple, show-stopping flowers top lush, green foliage on the spike speedwell ‘Royal Rembrandt’. The long-blooming flowers appear clustered on long spikes that account for half of the plant’s height. Butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to this plant, while deer and rabbits do not find it attractive. ‘Royal Rembrandt’ is a cultivar of the species Veronica spicata and valued for its easy-to-grow nature.
Utilize this spike speedwell alongside rounded flowers like daisies, coneflowers, and black-eyed Susans to create a contrasting display. Plant several in one area to create a mass of brilliant color. Combine it with other perennials or annuals for an appealing container planting or use the vertical blooms to great effect in cut flower arrangements. It also tolerates salt, so it is a good candidate for coastal plantings or near paths and driveways that are salt treated in the winter.
Royal Rembrandt Spike Speedwell Care
This low-maintenance perennial requires full to partial sun to thrive. It prefers average, well-drained soil and grows well in slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soils. Be sure to water spike speedwell regularly during the period of establishment and about twice weekly during dry spells once it is established, as regular moisture is necessary to maintain an attractive appearance. Fertilize it annually each spring with a slow-release, organic fertilizer to encourage vigor.
Cut the Royal Rembrandt to just above ground level after a hard freeze in the fall each year. To encourage a second summertime bloom, shear the plant back just after it finishes its first flush.
Royal Rembrandt Spike Speedwell Spacing
This spike speedwell grows 18 to 20 inches tall with a comparable spread. Space multiple plants 18 inches apart to create a mass of color, or provide a bit more space to use it as a specimen in a mixed perennial planting.
