Running Tapestry Foamflower, or Tiarella Cordifolia, is often called Sugar-Scoop because of its light-green, heart-shaped foliage and clusters of white blooms. It has unique, deeply lobed leaves with rich dark-purple to maroon veins and an elegant, refined texture. With a mature height of 10 to 18 inches, this gorgeous Tiarella provides a viridescent tapestry of groundcover that changes to a burgundy-laced carpet after the first frost. The lightly scented, firefly flowers that appear from mid-spring to midsummer are perfect sparks of light in any shaded perennial garden.
Running Tapestry Foamflower is native to North America and is deer and rabbit resistant. It is a hardy plant that grows aggressively, easily spreading between 18 and 23 inches. Pollinators of all kinds will love the early blooms of this beautiful flower. They are low-maintenance plants that require minimal tending, though it is good to cut away the previous year’s foliage in early spring before the plant resumes active growth.
Running Tapestry Foamflower Care
Running Tapestry Foamflower grows best in rich, acidic soil that is evenly moist and well-drained. It should be planted in partial to full shade with space for growth. Running Tapestry is categorized as an evergreen plant, but most gardeners lovingly refer to it as “semi-evergreen” instead, because of the changing colors of the foliage in the fall.
Foam Flowers are most effective when planted in groupings or grown in rocky gardens. They are excellent for border-edging and thick groundcover, and, because they provide a substantial mass of foliage, are perfect as a filler flower in a container. If you live in a colder climate, or if your foam flowers are planted in an exposed location, add a thick layer of mulch around the root zone to protect them during winter months.
Running Tapestry Foamflower Spacing
When grown in masses or used as bedding, Running Tapestry Foamflower should be spaced 15 to 18 inches apart. Running Tapestry Foamflower grows well interlaced with Heuchera and Maidenhair Ferns.
