Stunning color and hardy summer performance make the Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox or Jamesbrittenia hybrid a showy addition to a landscape. This prolific plant blooms from spring through the first frost, providing consistent color. Each flower features five petals with a notch on the end for subtle detail. Orange and golden yellow eyes stand out, while dark purple accents contrast the lavender petals. Deeply lobed leaves are medium green and add a feathery texture.
This South African native is heat tolerant and will continue to look amazing and vibrant while experiencing the heat and humidity of summer. The low, spreading growth habit makes this African Phlox a good choice for the front of a mixed bed or as a container filler. This Phlox is a great choice to transition a springtime bed into a dense summer planting after the early season plants fade.
Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox Care
Plant Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox in part sun to full sun. This plant is drought tolerant, but needs water during a dry period to support continuous blooms. It prefers a rich, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Rich soil is often enough to support growth, but apply a layer of organic mulch to give the plants a nutritional boost and retain moisture.
Deadheading will maintain a tidy appearance but isn’t strictly necessary for the Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox. Remove dead or damaged growth as needed.
Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox Spacing
The short form of the Safari® Dusk™ South African Phlox reaches 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads 12 to 24 inches. Stems can trail up to 8 inches. Space plants 12 inches apart to create a full planting or feature two plants in a 12-inch container.
