Dianthus is a striking perennial that adds a burst of color to a landscape. Lively pink full-sized flowers feature petals with fringed edges. Narrow, sword-shaped deep green leaves offset the flowers. Dianthus Barbarini Sweet William is a low-maintenance plant that grows as a perennial in USDA growing zones 5 through 8.

This beauty is a dwarf variety and reaches about a foot tall, so feature it near the front of beds or borders. Dianthus makes a stunning plant when used solo in a container or included in a mixed planting where the lush greenery and vivid flowers will complement other plants. Butterflies will feed on the fragrant flowers, and these plants are rabbit-resistant.

Full sun is best for Salmon Barbarini™ Dianthus and will encourage full and healthy growth. This plant is easy to maintain and not very fussy in terms of soil quality, as long as the soil is well-drained. Water this plant weekly or when the soil starts to dry out.

Deadhead Dianthus to encourage more blooms and trim the plant back after the flowers fade to encourage more growth in the next growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.

This dwarf Dianthus will grow 8 to 12 inches tall and 9 to 12 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 8 to 10 inches to create a full bed or edging. Use an 8- to 10-inch container for two plants.
